Take it. Good pay for your region and most jobs start with 2weeks (10days) vacation, nothing close to 10% bonus (my annual has been something like one week's pay), and NO profit sharing.

offer is decent, I am doing IT consulting (started in September..graduated in August with a B.S. in CS), my offer was mid 60's. What company btw? My co-worker is in Columbus and doing the same thing (not sure how much he is making though..). 3 weeks vacation, 100% matching on 401k up to 6%.

Base Salary - $52,500/year
Health, Vision, Dental Insurance and Short and Long Term Disability coverage
3 weeks paid vacation
Annual Performance Reviews where I can get a raise - was made known that they were 6-10% on average, and it was made clear that if you aren't performing well enough to get a raise you shouldn't be working there period
Bonuses - up to 10% again based on performance
401k plan
Eligable for profit sharing after a year of employment

My intial thought was that it looked pretty damned good, they're giving me this Thanksgiving break to think it through.

Any thoughts/comments? Thanks.

Senior EE student here with many friends in the CS and EE field. I would actually say the salary part is a little low compared with what I have seen here in the Dallas area, but NO ONE I have seen started with 15 days paid vacation. Combined with the other benefits, I agree with others who have said if you like the people/company, do it.

One thing is: if you are fairly sure you will perform well there you can ask for your first performance review to be at 6 months rather than at 1 year like most companies do. This is a great way to compensate for a lower starting salary since, if you are doing your job well, you will get a raise sooner.

its a bit low even for ohio, starting salaries in pacific nw for cs grads is between ~80k with a 10k signing bonus, places like SF or NYC are a bit higher.

52K is pretty low, i defintely wouldn't take it

I'm in central Ohio and I think that's pretty good starting salary. My guess is they might have you coming in a little higher than average since you have interned there for a bit. Fact is, in Ohio we have a lower cost of living than in most areas of the country that source IT workers and this is a good thing. So don't let anyone snob you because you don't stack up to what someone might get in a major metro area.

Hell, I know of several outfits closing thier socal shops and moving dev work to the Midwest for precisely this reason.

Living in Ohio is twice as cheap as SF or NYC. And I think you are a little bullsh!tting about CS grads making ~80k. Maybe 10% of them, but definitely not the average.

well, microsoft and amazon are up there. i know that amazon starting salary is around $80k, and i presume microsoft is similar (both companies are very hard to get jobs with..I interviewed with both).

but yes, you are right. $52k in Ohio is going to let you live better than $80k in SF/NYC..not sure about the cost of living in Seattle.

Good offer straight out of school, on par with what the big consulting firms offer for fresh grads...

Much much would it cost to buy a house near your office?

It looks like a pretty good offer. I'm glad to see the job market is turning around for newly-graduated comp sci guys.

Cleveland, OH = relatively low cost of living ... check
Good pay = check
Good benefits = check
Bonus = check
Raise amount = 6-10% is doable.
401k = check

I'd do it...sounds great for your first offer.

Not everyone can be an overpaid coder at amazon like you
52K plus benefits in suburban cleveland is like making 100K in major metropolitan areas like SF or NYC.

OP: You would be a bit of a fool to pass up an offer like that right out of school at a firm you've been interning with.

this is an initial offer, you can push for a bit more. Say you don't want to argue with him, but you'll shake on $56k and not harass him for a sign on bonus.

he'll most likely either agree on the spot or come back with 55k just because it is a more round number or 54k to meet you in the middle. But take anything he offers.

I think you cold potentially get low 60s though, but that may be too far out his range and he'll just stop negotiations on the spot.

Well that was kind of harsh. I think that's a pretty good offer for a fresh out of college prospect.

That's a very good offer as most of my friends in here in New York City started off $50-55k right out of college.

Some people gets lucky and gets $80k+ for a level 1 desktop support like my friend working for a financial. Plus it all depends on the company you work for, if you want the money, financial/law/consulting companies are the place to work for. If you are working for a financial company and you are doing level 1 support, that will probably all you ever touch. If you do leave the company, desktop support is all you've learned and other companies will not pay as much.

Life is unfair sometimes.

ask for $55 - take whatever they come back with. asking for more is a sign that you wont be taken lightly.

Congrats on the offer. It looks good.

Just so you have no suprises though, be sure to check on what your contribution is for health care. If you are single (which you imply) , they often pay all of the premium. Wife and kids can add to that cost.

lol I thought Ameesh was being sarcastic. Maybe he still thinks that CS grads make 80k out of college. That was like more than 4-5 years ago.

It is a GREAT offer. Decent offer even in CA for straight out of school.
