Hi Guys, I have an interview to schedule with York University for a minor IT position. It's basically updating a website, making graphics, some light flash work etc (I believe). Here is the description:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Provide pro-active consulting support and service to faculty members in their develpment of Instructional Technology tools used to enhance teaching in classrooms, and on-line. Assist in the development, installation, and testing of web pages, web based teaching products like WebCT, and web authoring software.
Required Qualifications:
Applied knowledge of hardware/software that relates to PC's Mac's, and Unix systems, and their respective operating systems. Knowledge of Instructional Design. Experience with Authoring software (i.e. Dreamweaver MX, Contribute).
Experience with database software (i.e. SQL)
Experience with multimedia software (i.e. Photoshop, Sound Forge), Premiere, Quicktime, FlashMX, Fireworks MX)
Experience with Web Page construction.
Excellent communication skills coupled with the ability to interact with faculty members and senior administration staff. Possess an enthusiastic attitude in order to further your technical skills from practical training and learning. Experience in dealing with faculty members, understanding their unique technical needs and providing timely resolution to problems.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What should I prepare myself for in an interview for a position that deals with web development and IT like this? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

- Rob

Since it requires some artistic ability, I would bring examples of your work.

Very good idea, I was just thinking about where I should get my stuff laser printed.

Thanks.

Act like you're the freaking King of Siam and they're all just barely worthly of entertaining your greatness for even a few magical moments. Incessently roll your eyes and chuckle through your nose at everything they say. That's what they'll be expecting from a typical IT professional.

Actually, $250-300 inkjets have far better quality than laser printers do if you use good paper.

Be very confident and VERY professional looking and acting. Wear a flashy tie for artistic flair. ;)

Indeed, the professional attitude will go a long way.

I enjoyed your initial suggestion Hero, so true. I'll look into the printing thing as well, thanks!

sounds like a great resume builder.

I think by "examples" of your work, he meant electronically. Have some sample URLs available. I got asked for that in one of my first interviews also.

Most of these jobs with not-so-strict qualifications - since they mention "experience with" and nothing quantifiable - I'm sure your attitude will be the most important. Anyone can learn these tools but not everyone can get along with the others already there or be able to handle stress (timelines like mentioned).

Good luck, it sounds like a great job (at least the stuff I like)... also, what do you mean by "minor" position ?

Well, it's a student position, and about 15 hours a week maximum, that's all. I'm currently working a a web designer / junior engineer for the city of Ottawa, so I know how the whole working in a team thing goes, which is key.

Thanks for the kind words

I hate to say it, but this is by far the most truthful responce to the OP.

Oh I'm not surprised. My mum has been in the field for years, and I've met a lot of...well, characters, that she works with.
