Looks like those saying "Nvidia owns doom, but ATI will own HL2" were a good bit off the mark.. Looks like Nvidia does slightly better on some tests, and ATI does slightly better on others.. I call a draw - at least in this test.

So since Nvidia does WAY better in Doom3 - one of the major source engines being farmed to developers now, and about even in HL2, id say Nvidia would be a better purchase option.

Wrong. This is a benchmark of dust... DUST... the benchmarks are being severely engine limited as you can see that the x800 xt only loses 7 FPS from 640*480 to 1600*1200 on a AMD 64 3800+. It's not CPU limited, its engine limited. When you see some HL2 benchmarks with SEVERAL things to tax the video card's you will see a significantly bigger margin. There simply isn't enough of anything to require video power on dust of all levels.

sorry to spoil your nvidia pimping, but you can't get an honest impression of performace by looking average framerates in a capped benchmark.

That benchmark sucks my left nut, lets wait for xbitlabs, hardocp or At for a real benchmark...

I fooled around with CSS last night....the new engine is nothing special. It looks like its on HL1 engine, with a bunch of junk around for you to push around and shoot. In the main corridor there was some lighting that had some particles floating around, and when you shoot anything dust comes off it, but thats its. OK, shooting different materials produce a different sound, but graphically its not really different than CS1. Played at Max everything, but it made no real difference in the quality. I actually find myself questioning their reasoning behind porting this to HL2 in this way.

That's exactly what I have noticed from the videos and screen shots. It looks exactly like the Half Life 1 engine, but with higher quality textures. Hopefully it will be finished this month so I can finally play it.

Kobra, pimp your wares elsewhere. Your 6800GT was a good purchase (if you're willing to spend that much in the first place), as were those previous two 6800GT's you returned/fried/etc.

However, you don't need to rub our noses in it, and the X800 series of cards are still worthy purchases, especially with the X800Pro going for $330 now, vs $400 for the GT.

I want to know something, is there an official speech/coronation/etc where Rollo, Keysplayers, Genx87 and the like pass the Nvidia torch onto you, or is it a more shady, cloak-and-dagger type of affair?

Isn't it supposed to be capped at 90 (ninety) fps? If so, non of the benches even reached 80. So how does the cap effect these scores?

when you can't pass 90fps, you'd have to get 90fps constant just to get a 90 average. while if the framerate was uncaped, obviously the cards hiting 80fps average with then 90fps cap would have been running high than 90fps much of the time, so without the cap we would have seen much more varation in the benchmarks. benchmarking for average framerate with a framerate cap is almost as bad as benchmarking average framerate with vsync on.

From www.ve3d.com

what does any of this mean? HL2 sooner than soon?

Half-Life 2 Pre-Loads Begin Tomorrow 02:15 pm - Apache - games: action (5 comments)
Gabe Newell posted to the HL2 Fallout boards an update on today's Counter-Strike: Source beta release and word of when the Half-Life 2 pre-load begins for those who pre-order the game from Valve or hold the ATI coupon voucher. Here's the juice:

Quick update:

- ATI/CZ users will get turned on later tonight for the CS: Source test

- An update will be out today as well. This is largish (~60 MB).

- The size of the update is due to the Video Stress Test it includes. You'll be able to do some initial performance analysis using this test and report the data back to a central server. The results of the VST will be posted on Steampowered.com.

- HL/2 pre-load will begin tomorrow. It was ready yesterday, but we decided to use the bandwidth to get out the VST first since I get pelted with zillions of questions from people asking how their PC will run Half-Life 2.

LOL- agreed- but you should have added "You don't deserve a GT after destroying two".

The X800Pro is a damn good buy at $330.

Don't associate me with this guy. Even if there was some "Secret nVidia Pimps" club, I'd vote against his membership. I'd guess Keys and GenX would say the same.
LOL at myself- I kind of like that- "The Secret nVidia Pimps" ;)

BTW- I want to see some real HL2 benches as well, although it's nice to see this parity in a game that will be a huge online phenomenon.

(don't want to be getting smacked down ;) )

A cap at 90 fps can affect an average score.

Ahh, makes sense. TY

Jiffy, if ATI surpasses Nvidia in something, unlike some other folks, I don't really care nor will I defend or deny it. It's really not that important to me. Of course I like the fact that NV got their act together this round because just like the last generation I owned a 5900U instead of a 9800pro even though the pro was better at a bunch of games, I would still own an NV card even though it could have been slower at everything this gen also. (I'm just glad it's not the case.) So, I have no torch to pass to anyone. Kobra seems to be a little radical sometimes, but that's him, not I.

Xbitlabs already had a benchmark of it. It is called "Highly Anticipated DirectX9 Game 1" in a huge review of games. It was already posted here.

EDIT: NM its based off of the beta but its still more informative than this bench for sure.

Where are X800 Pro's going for $330? The cheapest I see on pricewatch is $392, and the cheapest I have ever heard of was $339 and that turned out to be a mistake, but they honored them in the end I think.

$330 is an exaggeration. Normally they are $399 or more.

Ok, just making sure :) As of the last time I checked ( a few hours ago ) you can get a Geforce 6800 GT for $389 according to pricewatch, just an fyi!

jeez, it certainly doesnt look like the HL1 engine. Cant play much CS if you think CS S looks like 1.6 in any particular way. The relevance of it being dust is limited- not least because these performance numbers are not from dust, they are from the stree-test, are they not?
