First GTX 480 pcb shots - Gpu is huge

Holy cooler batman, is that 4x8mm pipes? Plus holes in PCB for more intake?

Looking at the die size of the older G200 (GTX280), this one is slightly smaller. So the past guesses for Fermi at about ~530mm^2 seem correct.
 
AMD will be laughing all the way to the bank if this is within 5% performance of the HD 5870.

The HD 5870 is what? 263mm² with the 480 being ~530mm². . . This will mean it costs AMD significantly less to produce a single chip + less likely to get defects, no?

I feel as though the 480 isn't exactly going to be the 5800 Ultra again, just on the fact that it will be able to compete at least - albeit not very cool like.

Don't forget a 256-bit memory bus vs 384-bit (lower complexity PCB) and 1GB GDDR5 vs 1.5GB (less RAM costs less money).
And the less robust cooling solution (cheaper again)
And probably less power circuitry (cheaper again)
 
AMD and nVIDIA have had the same corresponding strategy for so long. I'm just not sure why we keep bringing up the exact same points. Yes, their GPUs are huge, scarce, hot, power hungry, expensive to make and expensive to put on a board and so forth. They are also at least a little faster than their AMD counterparts, and that is all they need for the marketers to do the rest.

Yes, this time around ATI's die size is closer to Nvidia's die size.

One thing that helped ATI keep die size down last generation (in comparison to Nvidia) was GDDR5.
 
Guys the size is fine. I have seen longer. It wont interfere with some of your RAM mobo situations.

Looks to me same size as a 88xx series 98xx series .

It looks like it has 12 BGA RAM chips. I wonder how much each is so we know the total VRAM it comes with. Im guessing 256mb ram on each chip x 12 . That is 3GB , wtf lol ATI is 4GB,,, hmmmm ..
 
480 = 128mb x 12 = 1536mb, 384bit you can probably get a version with 256mb x 12 later

470 = 128mb x 10 = 1280mb, 320bit
 
I don't much care about how it looks like with exception of maybe 2 slot cooler or 1 slot, most important thing is if it's going to perform well but that we should find out in about 4 weeks.
 
Why does it have 2 sli connectors if only 5000 are going to be released? If the rumors are true of course. Good luck getting 3 of these. lol

This looks like it's around 500mm² based on the article linked; falling between G80 and GTX280. The power circuitry is beefy though.
