You shouldn't solely rely on newegg.com, at microcenter the e8400 sells for less then 200$ for example whilst it sells for 240$ at newegg.com. And no, there is no real way to shave of some of the expenses on your build, only a e2180 perhaps, and overclock it, but otherwise, no.

The E4500 is only marginally slower than the X2 5000, and can be overclocked much easier to much higher levels.

Yeah ziggy, you can't just look at how much GHZ a CPU is. For example, a 2.2ghz e4500 is equally fast as a 2.6ghz AMD cpu, because clock for clock, it's faster then the AMD cpu. Usually most core 2 duo's are about 20-25% faster clock for clock then AMD cpu's.

Yes I realize that now, I also neglected to look at the L2 cache 2MB intel compared to 1MB AMD. So everything is back to what it was, except my case is sold out :( Whats the waiting time on this kind of item usually? I don't want to miss out on the $50 rebate.

Cache isn't even the whole story. The E4500 would still be faster even if the AMD chip had as much L2 cache space, because the Core2 architecture gets more work done per clock cycle.

Herumph, I missed my chance on my shmexy p182, its now at $149.99 with no rebate. I have been told again and again by my friend to consider the antec 900, but I just need a second opinion.

wow, quadruple post  , please hold off on banning me until I get my computer built.

Anyways, I just wanted to know what you guys thought of the 9600, as I think I am switching to it from the hd 3850, here's the link, $189.99 same price as the radeon I was planning on getting. I also added a 35gb 10,000 rpm WD HDD (link) to my list for the OS and Apps.

Should I wait for the 9800's?

Save up for a really nice notebook.

Think of the college hotties and your home-made porn.

You will henceforth be known as Buck Nekkid, AT Porn God

I have talked to plenty of people who have been in and out of colleges, my sister is currently attending, all have said the same thing: that they hardly ever bring a laptop to class, and if they do, its only for entertainment to get through a boring class. I have seen the smallest dorms imaginable, a desktop would still fit comfortably in one of them. I am going to school for graphic design, the college I just recently was accepted to has a 24/7 tech-lab outfitted with top of the line g-5's, any class that requires a computer will take place in a lab. If I really end up needing one for taking notes or whatever, I'll just get a cheapo EEE pc or something. This comp isn't really a necessity for college, It will help though. I hope that clears that up

I would have to disagree, there's a nice program for taking notes in class called OneNote. It gives you much more flexibility over MS Word.

A lot of serious students bring a laptop to class. Especially if you get a fairly portable one. If you practice taking notes on your computer, you will be much happier in the long run. It is easier to take notes by hand at first, but once you get good at taking notes on laptop, it is night and day difference.

The only major difficulty is math and science classes that have a lot of equations to write down, in this case a tablet PC can help quite a bit, or you could just revert to pen&paper.

That hard drive you linked is rediculously expensive. I don't even get why, really.

Yes that's why I would probably go with an inexpensive one, I could just buy a cheapo, reformat and install a lightweight linux distro and just use it for notes or web browsing.

The reason that HDD is so expensive is because it's 10,000 rpm, at the same time though, I must admit that was a bad pick, with only 1 pallet and a 16mb cache, a lower priced seagate 7200 would probably be faster.

Meh, a laptop for class has its ups and downs. I store a lot of notes on mine, and use a pen & paper for some things. But it really cuts back the writing portion. I am able to summarize what the teacher is saying or writing rather than copying/short handing the notes for a much better understanding since I type so much faster than I write. On top of that, it keeps me awake in a boring class.

But for gaming, desktop ftw.

I hear the Antec 900 is a great case. The only real downside is the cable management can get a bit frustrating.

As for the computer labs, it's a pain the ass to go to a lab to do assignments if you can get your hands on the program and do it at home/dorm.

I find it much better to do assignments in the computer labs because if I sit at home I'll just use the internet or watch series or play games .

I understand.

It's the 'portability' issue really - not just class.

Going to the library, work groups, dorm room, lab, your friends place, take it home (while your mom does your laundry)

Or you could take it to the laundry when you have to do it yourself :)

The one I picked out has a 32mb cache, and I think 500 gb is plenty, what I was wondering was would it be better to buy like two 250gb drives, and allocate os to one and apps and data to another.

For now I think I'm just gonna stick with the 32 cache 500gb seagate barracuda, I can upgrade later, here is my list.
Wish List
I think I am ready to order, any last minute suggestions?

My problem was that even if I went to the computer labs I'd end up on the internet. :p

I'm in the labs now before a Databases tutorial and I'm definitely not posting on the forums right now, no not at all...
