This is a little short-sighted. It's an extremely complicated robot that needs to be tested for a long, long time. If you want to be sure your multi-million dollar robot doesn't fall over and explode, you take the necessary precautions, especially while it's in the lab where unvetted code will be written and debugged regularly.

Presumably you put sensors on the robot, then dress it in MOPP gear, then have it walk around in a contaminated environment to see what gets past the MOPP gear.
