Have you had any problems with your ATI card and resolution changes? I saw a post on Operating Systems the other day and the guy said he couldn't change resolutions without his box bluescreening. He had a 4870 and I also have that card. I also am wondering if that Network Manager gadget comes with 7 or if you had to D/L it?

I just subscribed to MSDN AA and have a burned copy of 7 waiting for me at home. I'm trying to figure out if the ATI issue is widespread or not before making the plunge...

I am using on board ATI 3100 graphics and have not had any bsod's. Occasionally when the machine resumes from standby the resolution has reverted downward (can't remember to what) and I have to click the Catalyst Control Centers "detect monitor" and it puts it back to 1650x1080. When I get a chance I am going to check and see if "force resolution" option is availble in this version of catalyst control center.

The network gadget I downloaded from the MS website. I wanted to be able to see if traffic was flowing when a web page fails to load, etc.

I switched back to XP for now, because some of my school programs won't work on W7. I liked it for the 2 weeks I had it though. Great improvement in terms of usability.

Did you try running WinXP mode? It runs a couple of old apps I have pretty nicely.

Looks just like my Vista desktop except I have no desktop icons and definitely not the stupid sidebar thing!

Generally AV-Comparatives is the most trusted source for anti virus testing. These are their results:
http://www.av-comparatives.org...ndret/avc_report21.pdf

Avira - 99.7%
Avast - 98.2%
AVG - 93.0%

AVG is also significantly more resource demanding than Avast or Avira. There's no reason to choose AVG anymore, it's the slowest and has the worst detection out of all three.

You can see their performance testing here:
http://www.av-comparatives.org...nce/performance08a.pdf

I hate AVG Free 8... the "please buy me!" pop-up ads drove me nuts!

i run it now on my desktop and love it.

Hopefully Microsoft Security Essentials will put all of the AV vendors out of business.

Yes, because we all know how well Microsoft handles security!

Yes, I think everyone would.
However, MS has a really, really poor track record in this area.

I did, but it was SOOO slow. I only have 2.25 GB of RAM and my hard drive is slower than molasses. Once I get a better system I'm switching back.

Opening the Virtual Machine takes a long time on my athlon x2 2700 with 3 gb ram and 500 gb Western Digital sata 16 mb cache machine.
However once its open the XP runs pretty good. In fact, the WinXP machine is limited to only 512 mb or your ram.
And its really only there for one or two apps that need it.

I never once got that for any avg versions but compared to how much people hate the Avira pop up can you really complain?

Yeah... standard issue netbook specs. One gig of ram and a 1.6 GHz Atom N270, and a 10.1" screen.

The link lists some real world Win7 recommendations. I think with 2 gb of ram you should be good.
