the 5D having a crappy AF system

I would not say it's crappy. The 5D MK ii focuses instantly. It does have more misses than the D700, but also is very capable of making shots that you just won't get on the D700. This only matters if you are shooting things that move quickly and/or in dim light. I prefer the low light performance and more productive auto-focus of the Nikon 700. I am envious of the kind of nature shots my friends get with their 5Ds.

Not crappy, just different.

Well lets not get into a 5d auto focus debate, and i dont think there is any reason to recommend a 2500dollar camera to someone who is looking at buying a 500 dollar camera and is looking at buying very introductory lenses. (that isnt to say those lenses are bad but lenses can easily be in the thousands) So i would stress again my opinion that a t2I would be a fine camera to start off with. The IQ/picture quality coming from the t2I is just as good as whats coming from the 7d and the 7d is only a little behind the 5d in this respect, but for most people i hardly think they could notice the difference. Like i said i myself have a 50d and would also like to move to full frame but one of the main things thats stopping me is that my lens settup isnt that stellar. And my pictures will gain more improvement by me buying better lenses than they would in me upgrading bodies.

I decided to pass on the package deal I referred to a few posts back. At this point I'm planning to get the T2i refurb kit from Canon unless a really sweet deal on a 40/50/60d pops up on CL in the next few days. I'll definitely keep you up to date.

Thanks again for all of the camera buying advice and I hope to soon come back and have to ask, 'someone tell me what I'm doing wrong with my camera.'

And also, thanks for the reading material advice. I'm definitely going to hit the library and pick up a book or two as soon as I can.

The t2i just showed back up in the Canon store so I pulled the trigger. Got the kit (refurb) for ~$550 after tax. Should be here on Monday!
