Ok, finally got a little more information from him. To specify what to backup, you have to manually go to each machine that you want backed up and use the local backup exec desktop app. This is obviously a pain as there are 50+ machines here. The other thing is that Veritas won't backup a file that's in use. Meaning the PST files can't be backed up while Outlook is running. I can confirm this as I tested it on my machine using the desktop app. Are there are workarounds to this?

You need Open File Agent for backing up open files. WTF are they thinking by not only using PSTs with Exchange, but also having it stored on each PC?! That company sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Anyways, you will be paying out the nose if you want to legally license 50 end machines to be backed up selectively.

Ok, so the open file option will solve that problem. So there is no way to select which machines you want to backup there PSTs from the server?

Arghh... the problem is the backup server has a KVM switch to my bosses computer so I can't get on it while he's there. He did say I could play with it sometime today though.

You can choose from the server.

Open Back Exec
Click "Backup" on the toolbar. This is the Backup Properties menu.
Choose "Selections" from the menu on the right.
You should see a list of the server, followed by it's local resources, and then Remote Selections. From here, yo ucan drill down into the machines and choose which drives, files, or folders you want backed up.

I don't know! I know nothing about PST files or exchange!! Are the same settings found in the PST files that are in Exchange? Or wait, maybe I'm not understanding him correctly and we aren't really backing up Exchange?

outlooks keeps a local copy of the mailbox too speed things up and to save bandwith

the auto archive only archives sent items as far as I know, could be wrong about that though, even if that is not so it would be best to auto archive to a file server instead of doing it localy

Backup Exec won't backup to DVDs. Retrospect will, and it has cheap agents to use on each PC.

This is still a dumb way of doing things... if you must use PSTs then they should be stored on the server, or have a login script copy them to the server when each user logs off at night. Then backup to tape with Backup Exec.

It sounds like your "boss" wants to backup everything on people's PC's instead of forcing them to store important documents/email on the servers. That's just bad practice IMO.

This belongs to software forum i believe. There is a way to do it...there is a program that will extract the into PST files from the exchange server. That way you can use any programs to write to your DVDs.
