So for some time I have been working in the field as a sofware engineer(in the UK) although have been more interested in networking and TCP-IP.
Now after so many years of doing one thing, I actually start in a few week in a Network Operations centre role.
Im confident with my skills but have never walked into a new role with network performance as my priority... I was wondering if any of the readers on here had experience or were already working in a similar role and had any suggestions on what my priorities should be when walking into a role like this.

(wasnt sure if this belonged in social or networking but decided to post here)

Thanks!

You do not know everything but you are willing to learn.
You do not know how to fix every problem but you are willing to help.

And don't be afraid to network above your boss. Which apparently means banging a VP.

Dress a little nicer than you normally would because the non nerds you have to interact with will care and judge you by it. And often it will be these people who determine your career advancement not the nerds that actually know about the hard work you are doing and why its hard.

At least that is the advice I wish I would have gotten.

Just be yourself and take everything in stride. Hopefully you'll have 3-6months or longer to get comfortable in the new role. You can't learn it all overnight. My recommendation is to document everything you do for your own reference.... This would be great if you have a wiki or something for your own internal documentation....that way your notes are easily searchable in a year or 2 when you're trying to remember what you've done, but isn't yet second nature to you.

generally, no one wants to deal with a new guy who comes in and immediately starts pointing out every single flaw in the system and how they're so amazing at their job that they'll be able to fix it all.

chances are, the people already know about the flaws if they're dealing with them every day, and while a fresh pair of eyes is appreciated, rather than complaining/criticizing, maybe pose it as a question (eg: "that's wrong, you should be doing X" versus "why are you doing it this way instead of that way? what are the benefits?")

Find the biggest guy and fight him; from that day forward, no one will fuck with you. Wait, that's prison. Ummm... be nice, keep your head down, do your work and network effectively with people in positions of power?
