Hey, I just went to my first actual concert last night, TOOL @ the Allstate Arena in Chicago. It was my first 'actual' concert because I had been to one before but I didn't listen to the music and I didn't know who the band was, so I wouldn't call it a concert for me. I was very excited for TOOL though, because they are awesome.
My friend and I had floor tickets. We were about 20 ft behind the barrier to the stage when Meshuggah (sp?) came on @ 7:30. I had to admit, I didn't think they were very good. I really like heavy rock, but I just thought the singer was wailing and screaming while the hair-bandish guitarists knocked out the same riffs for each songs. They weren't horrible but they definitely were not TOOL. After 45 mins of their set, the setup for TOOL began (which took about 15 mins). The lights went out and everybody started screaming.
Maynard, Danny, Adam, and Justin all walked onto the stage with Maynard in the back in front of a screen doubling the images on the 2 larger screens above the stage. Here was their set list.
the grudge
stinkfist
undertow
46 & 2
eulogy
shcism w/ maynard on guitar
disposition
reflection
intermission w/ contortionists
parabol
parabola
eon blu apocalypse
the patient
aenima
lateralus
They had the contortionists from the schism video and they hung above the stage suspended on wires while they performed an act. It was unbelieavble! My first concert could not have been any better. People went nuts as they played aenima and lateralus was just the perfect ending to the whole concert. At the end, Danny threw his drum sticks into the crowd and they threw some frisbees. Then they all had a group hug (while I snapped many a pictures) and walked off to the applause of the whole crowd.
I was left dumbfounded by this experience I just had. Looking back, it was just a fantastic concert that I am so lucky for having been able to attend. Not to mention the fact that we got pushed to about 5 - 10 feet from the stage when TOOL came on and we had a great view of everybody (especially Justin who was right in front of us). I can't even begin to describe the euphoria I felt.
What a truly amazing first concert experience
Does anybody else have a great first concert experience?
