It really depends on what you use the CPU on. For raw gaming, just save some cash and get the i5.

I would assume HT would come into play increasingly as games will have to be multithreaded to a greater degree, given both next gen consoles are on 8 core jaguars.

Eventually, probably, some games at least.

Guess what I am saying is nobody really knows yet. It also depends on how well console games are ported to fewer but faster cores. There are some new games coming out such as Company of Heroes 2 and Neverwinter that favor fewer faster cores.

Personally, I am sure in some games hyperthreading will be of benefit, but I dont know if it will be enough so to justify the extra expense. You can get 8 threads from AMD, and it might be better for some future games, but at the expense of poorer performance nearly all current and recent games.
