Very true about wrecking your first car, a lot of people I know have done that. So any suggestions on ~4k cars that aren't crap? Then I can take the rest of the cash I have, and add a lot to over a year or two and buy a really nice car.

I've got a loaded 95 Mercury Mystique w/ 53k miles. It's a 6 cylinder 5spd. Nice car.

I'll sell it for $7000 :)

Go pick up a late 80's/early 90's Accord or Prelude. If you look, you can find one that hasn't been abused. You shouldn't have to spend more than three or four thousand. I got my '89 Accord for $2750, & I've been happy with it so far. Only two issues that I have to get fixed are alignment & front rotors, other than that it's been great so far.

Now that you mention it, I wrecked my first car. Things that make you go "Hmmmmm."

My first vehicle was a 1990 Ford Ranger. Toughest thing I have had yet. And I wrecked too, that's kinda weird.

$4k is still sounds a bit high to me but then my first car was a 81 dodge mirida with a /6 auto that I paid $600 for. I drove it for almost a year without any problems till I slammed into a toyota truck at 30mph :). It still ran and drove just fine but it was kinda hard to see at night without headlights :) so I sold it. How bout something along the lines of a Ford crown vics, dodge diplomat, chevy monte carlo, caprice, ect. All those type of cars are generally fairly big, reliable, safe, available with a v8 :), have cheap parts, and since they are all RWD it will give your parents a good reason not to let you drive in the snow.

My first car will be a 2001 Nissan Maxima! And I've been driving for over 4 years. You think I should get an old beater, instead of a new car!

Oh how the years go by???;)

7k for a car that is less than 5yrs old? At best, you can get a Civic but you're looking at the price range of a dinky car like a Geo Metro, Kia Sephia, Ford Festiva, and all those other "barely 4-cylinder" cars. ;)
