I would go with an X1950 Pro over a 7900 GT, and it should be cheaper.

I'd also get 2GB of Value ram over 1GB of whatever.

I assume you are OC'ing? If not, get a cheaper motherboard. Gigabyte GA-965P-S3.

I would keep that mobo. It's a great mobo and it overclocks like crazy. I would keep the RAM, only bum it up to 2x 1GB sticks. You'll want the extra RAM.......I have that video card, except that it is from eVGA. I would recommend that card over the XFX. I have mine OC'd to 575MHz/950MHZ and it doesn't void any warranty. But try looking at an 7950GT or at least a 7900GTX. Better cards.

And is this a good card for that GPU? http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=324623

Yeah, if you are not OC'ing, stick with this...

You have heard good things about the P5B because it's a good OC'er.

I have not used that Asus X1950 Pro, but I have used this one...

For memory, you don't need 800mhz DDR2. Even 533mhz DDR2, in dual channel, will be good enough to hit the 1066mhz FSB of the cpu. This will be good...

That would be a better choice of RAM. I still think you should keep or original Asus mobo, though.

Your other build came to about $1000 without the monitor. For a NON-overclocking mid-range computer, here's what I'd go with:

Core 2 Duo E6400 - $218
Gigabyte GA-P965-S3 - $116
2x1GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800, 4-4-4-12 - $248 after MIR
Powercolor X1950 Pro, PCI-E - $230
Seagate 7200.10 320GB, SATA - $95
Cooler Master Centurion 5 Case - $45
Corsair HX520w Power Supply - $120
Total: $1072

If you want to save a bit of cash, you can downgrade to an E6300. I upped it to an E6400 since you won't be overclocked at all, and the extra megahertz help. You can also get away with cheaper memory (a 2GB kit can be had for around $200 if you look around), but I didn't see anything that caught my eye. Finally, if you're a bigger fan of nVidia, look into a 7950GT with a good rebate - eVGA is my personal favorite, but I don't see them on sale often.

King, this is a good set up too if you are looking to save some money. Two things though. Get the case you like the best. Remember, you have to look at it everyday, so it's a perssonal choice. Second, I would add a second hard drive to use as storage. Kepp one HD for your most used apps and OS, the second as storage.

Also, I'm an Nvidia fanboy, so I would stick with an eVGA video card.

I'm not sure of the compatibility. But possibly. In the end though, it won't matter if you are not OC'ing. I just like Corsair VS, because it's worked in every motherboard I've ever tried it in.

Why would you recommend "2x1GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800, 4-4-4-12 - $248 after MIR " for a non-OC'er?

Thanks guys, I've taken all of your comments under consideration. I think I'm going with nvidia 7900GT or the X1950PRO. From what I've seen in benchmarks they are close, and the prices are too.

Definitely switching the motherboard, and I'm going to get the OCZ RAM, if it is compatible(haven't checked yet) and if its not I'll get the Corsair Value RAM. Otherwise I think everything else I'm keeping how I had it in the first post. Thanks again, and I'm not buying this yet so comments still appreciated.

If you don't mind a recommendation on a case, I really like the Cavalier 3 case a lot better than whatcha got up there.

For pics...

Cheaper at ZZF because of free shipping...

The reason I like this case is that, IMO, it is better designed and better-looking, and uses thicker metal. Unlike other cases with a front door, this one has a very sturdy door. All metal, and has a small yet effective magnet that keeps it shut, rather than a plastic clasp that could easily break. I like it more so than some of the more expensive cases, like the Tsunami.
