I wouldn't go for a really good beer right off. Chances are you won't like it.

I've heard Yuengling is a pretty good step to decent beers if you have that around you. You might like Pyramid Hefeweizen.

I cant remember what I started on, but some crap like bud or miller lite. After drinking myself sick I could no longer drink beer, ever. Then i discovered Woodchuck hard cider. If I had to say its about half way between cheerleader beer and bud/mil lite. Its not really sweet but it does not taste like poo. After drinking that for awhile I was able to get myself back on regular beer and now I can drink about anything.

Woodchuck is too sweet. Woodpecker is much more crisp & mild.

I'll have to see if I can find some of that and give it a try. I have also tried hornsby cider, but I think it tastes horrible.

Strongbow is a good cider too.

I had my first beer the other night and it was a bud light from a bottle...let me say I thought it was pretty gross....esp. while eating chinese food. Not a good one to try....I really want to try like german and european beer too....all my friends are to cheap to buy some though.

You need to try all the various styles - pilsners, lagers, ales, stouts, but you sound like someone who might really enjoy ale... and the Boston area has tons of ale makers. Harpoon is on tap all over town, they make relatively mild ales, a good place to start. Their IPA is about as hoppy as many local breweries' standard ales.

If you find this type to your liking, your next step will be to ride the T up to Medford or Malden, and find a Kappy's where they sell Ipswich Ale in the 64 ounce jug. Get yourself a growler of the Original ale (red label) and enjoy it with a friend (or kill it off by yourself and get pretty toasty). Want to go further? the IPA (yellow label) is pretty hardcore - first time you have it, it's like having a bale of hops dropped on your head, but once your taste buds get used to it, you will discover a very fruity, floral sort of taste in there. Dark Ale (green label) is also heavily hoppy with lots of toasted malt thrown in.

Also, if you can find it, Smuttynose out of Portsmouth, NH is damn good if you turn out to be an ale afficionado.

So how "difficult" are darker beers to drink. And how do they differ from lighter beers?

Beer is something of an aquired taste. That said, some people never aquire a taste for the good stuff and drink piss in a bottle their whole lives. Dark beers tend to have more/stronger flavour than lite beers.

If I were you I would try
1. a lite beer
2. a wheat beer
3. a red beer
4. A good dark beer (guiness)

or just drink 4. guinesses

Get one of those Belgian monk beers they sell in wine bottles.
I have a bottle of Chimay Triple in the fridge, but my roommate took his bottle opener with him to Paris this weekend 🙁

Edit: I'm in Europe, so it isn't that weird for him to be in Paris 😛
