First arrest ever filmed on Google Glass

All it really does is add the time lost to pull out a cell phone and press the buttons required for recording. POV porn is already good enough for my tastes anyways.

Google Glass is tomorrow's Segway.

It'll be cool for about a year, then everyone will realize that they really serve no purpose and you look like a douche while using it.

This is stupid because its not the person wearing them getting arrested. The whole point is the point of view. Who gives a shit about someone watching others get arrested?

I don't see a comparison at all. Glass is just an early rendition of where personal/mobile computing is heading. Segways were just a hyped niche product that solved a non-existent problem.

Some company will come up with one where the display is just like normal glasses (or sunglasses) and tethers to your smartphone so it will be a lot more inconspicuous. They're already doing prototype contact lenses that function as displays. Plus they've implanted lenses in people's eyes so its not that big of a jump to using that as the camera. Likewise they're starting to do hearing aid implants.

Sounds like Google Glasses to me.

Which is exactly my opinion of Glass.

Which is exactly why I think you're wrong. Actually I don't just think it, its a major focus for a lot of computing projects, from the military to major corporations that essentially dictate the computing products you use.

If you want to argue this first version of Glass then ok although that's just so silly I can't imagine someone making that argument as it'd be like saying how laptops were just totally stupid or PDAs were even though anyone with even a remotely limited amount of foresight could see what the potential for products like that are. Its basically known to be a beta product to get real world data on its use so they can improve it for widespread use.

The Segway is an intentionally niche product whereas Glass is a natural progression of the market.

Let me guess you were also saying this same thing about the iPhone? Or maybe the iPad (there have been a few people who have said that about the iPad on here).

Further parallel: Segway was based upon promising technology that had a useful purpose (helping handicapped people, in that case) but was squandered on stupidity.

Further perpendicular, well yeah that's exactly why its stupid. It was hyped as literally something that would completely change transportation, when literally the only thing it did of note was the interesting balancing which proved to actually be unnecessary for a vehicle of its intended use.

How do you call mobile computing a niche? Think of the thousands of videos that have been captured on cell phones and their impact on society. The amazing thing about Glass is the ease at which you can carry it and film. Imagine the technology of a news reporters camera, sitting on the bridge of you nose, 24/7. When the manufacturing costs lower enough so that it's widely accessible (unquestionably will happen) then the level of connectedness it brings will be stunning.

/drinks more Kool-aid

All of these mentioned things are natural progressions of technology implemented in dumb ways to attract the sheeple. It's a progression of the market in that the market wants to see things that make them say 'oooh, shiny.'

Small touchscreen computers can have some very effective uses. Apple said 'HAY LOOK, YOU MAKE PHONECALLS AND PLAY MUSIC ON IT.'

The tech in the Segway was first introduced as a wheelchair that could climb stairs and shit. But instead, we got 'HAY LOOK, I'M A FUCKING LAZY DOUCHEKNOB.'

Google Glass (dumbass product name, btw) says, hey, look! Tiny cameras, a minature transparent display, complex programming, ect...'HAY LOOK, YOU CAN MAKE PHONECALLS AND PLAY MUSIC ON IT.'

Christ.

edit: one more random thought...it would appear that mankind has simply run out of things to invent. And/or we're dumb and/or just don't give a shit anymore. But hot damn, do we love to paste things together.

So we've all started to worship companies who are basically nothing but a corporate version of the wrenchknife-inventing janitor from 'Scrubs.'

You DO realize that most inventions are indeed "pasting things together". You don't invent a whole new product made up of only massive innovations and shit, specifically and especially in the tech field.

Glass is about the next stage of mobile computing, or at least a little stepping stone to it, where you don't have people carrying around giant slabs of a smartphone, bur instead have it always instantly available instead of having to bring it out every 5 minutes.

Also, Glass is all about taking the internals of a smatphone and having it engineered so that it can be worn at all times and be inconspicuous. Also shit like that Prism display is REALLY cool shit.

So, you basically admit that the product itself is not anything genius...it's the use of it...its intended purpose...

To which I would say 'just because you can, doesn't mean you should.'

Why would you drive that dumb car around all time time, you stupid person? Strap rocket shoes to your feet.

Hell, you know what's inconvenient? Food. Having to buy it all the time. Carry things places, and cook them and shit. You should just duct tape a nutrient-rich IV to the side of your head.

Me, I'm gonna keep my phone in my pocket and not pretend that walking down the street watching Youtube and posting on Facebook with a pair of glasses is somehow furthering technology, enhancing my life, or otherwise doing anything other than making me look like an enormous douche-filled douche coated in douche with a side of douchesauce.

You guys are way off base on the Segway. The real reason that it failed is it cost five-fucking-thousand dollars. I can get a used car for that kind of money. If the Segway only cost $500 then I would have bought one and a lot more would have too. You can get a top end scooter for $1500 and sit on your ass to boot so why even get a Segway.

Once the price gets down to $300 then ya this will take off and if the glasses will do everything my smart phone can do then I would consider getting them.

im surprised nobody swiped the glass off his face!
if people are willing to steal $700 phones... glass is like $1500 or more isnt it?

I predict youtube and flickr are going to have to increase storage capacity by a couple of orders of magnitude if Glass hits mainstream. Now, even situations where the slight extra effort of taking the phone out of pocket, unlocking and then hitting the camera app would dissuade someone from taking a pointless video are overcome by the ease of use of a head mounted camera.

Glass may sell well if the price point gets low enough but I don't see the potential being realized until good augmented reality apps take hold. I can imagine the power of this tool if I'm able to get all my information on tap just by glancing at someone/something. That'd be a hell of a world.

Using Google Glass while ON a Segway... now ya got something! You're achieved maximum technodoucheness there 🙂

That's the end goal, a powerful augmented reality, and eventually replacing cell phones completely. After all these years the fundamentals of using a cell phone have not changed, even with how far smart phones have come. Obviously we're not going to get there in one product generation, which for some reason is what Glass detractors are expecting.
