Ok here is the system:

Abit an8-ultra
2 512mb Simple tech DDR
BFG 7800 GT OC
Scythe ninja heatsink passive
AMD 4000+ San Diego core
Liteon DVD-rom and DVD+-RW
Antec P150 case
Seasonic s12-430 psu
Western Digital raptor 74gb
Diamond supra PCI modem (backup)

Latest drivers on everything, BIOS too on the Abit. I did NOT install the IDE drivers from Nvidia, nor the active armor/firewall. Sometimes I will get little times when the hard disc seems to get 'behind' XP and have to catch up, causing the screen/pointer to become unresponsive for a couple of seconds now and then. Something I never saw with the Intel system. Am I seeing the 'edginess' of going AMD, where the performance is better, but there are 'gotchas"?

Ok subjectively the system feels pretty fast; but my 3dmark05 score seems VERy low compared to others I've found with similar systems. With 3dmark05 at all default settings, my score is about 6950 or so.

CPU temp is about 30c at idle, board temp is about 32, PWM (wtf is this), 30c. Geforce 7800 core at 46c, 50 under load.

I'm coming from an Intel p4 3.4ghz prescott and Asus p5gdc. All parts other than those two were left alone. My 3dmark05 for that system was about 6200. Just seems like it should be more than that. I've gone through system settings and checked everything obvious..

Does that score sound about right fo the system?

Not sure how it compares to normal benchmarks, but gaining 750 '05 marks seems pretty good for a processor that is a full Gigahertz slower than your previous.

Edit: The second problem is odd, I only have that problem when I first boot, it is completely responsive after that. (sktA 2500+ 1.5G RAM)

Since it is a new build, no harm in trying to install the nVidia IDE and checking the performance. I am still staying away from the Firewall/AA, though.

I have the same problem, CPU temp. 33, MB 36c.

Ok subjectively the system feels pretty fast
Isn't that what matters the most? :)
