Make sure to keep a safer distance in the future.

It was only a matter of time before some asshat chimes in with the your fault hypothesis. Maybe if he just left the car at home, would that be safe enough following distance for you?

sheesh

My insurance just dropped to about $400 a year? But then again I've managed to avoid accidents so far. I'm having issues of my own though, to the point where it's almost not worth repairing the dang thing, but yeah, life is just too darned expensive sometimes.

the insurance in new jersey sucks.

mine's around $3,600 a year and i'm only 21. 🙁

Dude... get Geico. It'll save you a buttload of money... err unless you're accident prone. I'm 22 and in my 5 years of driving i've gotten 1 speeding ticket for 10mph over. I get full coverage from Geico for <1600 a year. This is on a 2004 Sentra SpecV in Jersey.

I will chime in with my opinion about fault.

The OP was following and hit the car in front - period.

If you're not ready to react to someone stopping in front of the car, and/or cannot brake because of conditions, and you hit the car in front of you then you are at fualt end of story.

The lady could have been stupid, senile, or just generally crazy, it doesn't really matter, it is the following driver's responsibility to not hit the car in front.

Yeah, it IS my fault techically... Although I did everything in my power to stop an accident from happening.

Well, I got a new car about 2 months ago, (new to me) a 93 Plymouth Duster. Today I totaled it. I was about 5 car-lengths behind this woman going about 45, and for some reason in the middle of the highway she slams on her brakes. I respond by promptly slamming on my brakes. Once I started breaking I hit a patch of ice and slid into her knocking off her rear bumper. My cars front bumper, quarter panels, radiator, and god knows what else was destroyed.

Ughhh... Once things start going Okay in my life something comes and ****** it up. I had my poker bankroll up to 2k.

What this is going to cost me?
150 - Towing and storage fees
500 - Insurance deductable
2000 - Price of new car
200 - Misc reg. fees

My insurance is already at 2k/year. I wonder what it's gonna go up to? I can't afford life.

Deductable? You don't have full converage on a $2k car do you? If you do you might want to rethink that next time.

I had my first accident on New Year's Eve (at the age of 38) in a similar fashion...lady in a little Mercedes did a full panic stop in front of me because she thought the semi two lanes over was merging into her lane. It was not. And yeah, it was my fault, I had just changed lanes and probably had a two car-length following distance instead of my customary three. At least the cop had some empathy and didn't ticket me 🙂.

w00t!!! Just found out my insurance MIGHT not be hurt because I'm not being ticketed. Jersey has NO FAULT insurance... Ice = NOT MY FAULT. HAHAHAHAH....

Oh and a few mechanics took a look at the car. They say it's probably fixable for less then 1k.

I was wondering the same thing...If you have a deductable, then you have collision insurance on your car, which means your insurance company pays you to have it repaired.

It still usually goes up any time you make a claim.

I totalled my car and my insurance spiked from $2600/yr to $4980/year in 2002 (I was 22). This is in NJ.

Kinda defeats the purpose of having comprehensive when they're gonna make their money back from the payout anyway.

No. I'm paying cash to get my car fixed. I thought I had a deductable for her possible claim against my insurnace?
