First Accident = Totaled

Well, I got a new car about 2 months ago, (new to me) a 93 Plymouth Duster. Today I totaled it. I was about 5 car-lengths behind this woman going about 45, and for some reason in the middle of the highway she slams on her brakes. I respond by promptly slamming on my brakes. Once I started breaking I hit a patch of ice and slid into her knocking off her rear bumper. My cars front bumper, quarter panels, radiator, and god knows what else was destroyed.

Ughhh... Once things start going Okay in my life something comes and ****** it up. I had my poker bankroll up to 2k.

What this is going to cost me?
150 - Towing and storage fees
500 - Insurance deductable
2000 - Price of new car
200 - Misc reg. fees

My insurance is already at 2k/year. I wonder what it's gonna go up to? I can't afford life.

My insurance just dropped to about $400 a year? But then again I've managed to avoid accidents so far. I'm having issues of my own though, to the point where it's almost not worth repairing the dang thing, but yeah, life is just too darned expensive sometimes.

Well, you can take off deductable and add increased insurance costs.

the insurance in new jersey sucks.

mine's around $3,600 a year and i'm only 21. 🙁

My insurance is about $1600/yr (but I'm only holding onto the car for about 6 months and I'll be taking a defensive driving course to cut it down further, so in the end, I'll be paying somewhere between $700 and $750 for the 6 months of use) and I'm only paying for liability coverage on my car.

OMG... there's no way in hell i could afford that. I live in NJ too. Before this I never had a ticket, never had an accident. I am willing to bet they try to charge me like 4k/yr

Being only 21 would be why your insurance is higher. Also, accidents and tickets and having a flashy riced up car don't help, if that's the case. I've always owned used cars, always driven in a safe manner, plus I get discounts for having multiple lines of service with the company, never having an accident, all that jazz. Plus I turn 25 in April so they dropped it by almost half 😀

did the lady say why she 'randomly' braked?

No. I think she hit the ice too because she did mention seeing it or feeling it or something. She probably wasn't paying attention and saw a red light like 20 yards in front of her. No reason to slam on the brakes though.

been driving since i was 16 and my record is still clean, i mean 100% clean. (ignore my parking tickets. 😛)

my car might be the reason why my insurance is so high.

New Jersey drivers. What can you do? They are imfamously bad. Why you think NJ insurance is so high?!

It's not a whole lot better here across the river.

Consider yourself lucky that you are alive and well.

Taking off the deductable would cost me about 1000/yr extra on my insurance.

It's not going to be cheap.... this past thanksgiving I slid off the road in my moms car when I was back home for break, go figure 🙁 I messed up the radiator pretty bad, no damage to the outside of the car, just underneath. Anyways, the bill came to about $1400 for parts and labor.

I actually had a '92 Sundance...very nice little car, had some zip to it, but it rusted out at a measley 140K...darn North-East weather.
