Playstation Blog - Prepare to flood your Facebook friends with Playstation Trophy notification, PSN store purchases, and other game updates when this firmware is released 'soon'. Thankfully, that isn't the default as once you tie your PSN account to your Facebook account you have the option of turning on trophy, PSN store, and game updates.

The game updates won't be available immediately as Sony is just making the tools for developers to create the game update criteria themselves.

Unlike the 360, the amount of Facebook integration is limited to updates being posted to your newsfeed. You'll still use the PS3 web browser or PC browser to view Facebook. Sony says that they've updated the PS3 browser to make Facebook more readable.

Other modifications include changing the pictures in the photo folders to a grid layout and changing the background color of your psn name and putting a box around highlighted friends.

Ok Sony, enough with these useless updates, when is my unified chat coming? And when the heck am I going to be able to purchase a digitally downloadable PS3 game? I just upgraded my 60GB PS3 with a 500GB drive, so I'm ready for some games now. :) Yes, I'm lazy. I don't want to get up to switch out games.

But thanks Queasy for keeping us updated with the PS3 updates. I just keep checking to see if Sony will FINALLY add some USEFUL features.

This is what happens when some corporate jerk thinks they have to compete with Microsoft on everything, despite this being completely useless. I will wager this feature will be even less used than HOME. Integrations with Facebook are never a good idea.

For game consoles I agree, but as a general statement I disagree. Facebook phone apps > using Facebook with a phone web browser.

Well the only good Facebook app is on the iPhone. Every other type of phone (Android/Palm/etc) with a Facebook app is exactly like this PS3 one that it's just the stupid feed.

Well this isn't really a Facebook app...

Whoops, didn't even read that far. :D

Didn't they update the Blackberry app recently to make it not suck? I thought they were going to. The iPhone app used to suck kind of badly too.

I haven't played with the BB app for over a month but when I played with it, it sucked. They need to release it fully working or not at all. Releasing it like this is just stupid.

Facebook on the 360's saving grace is that it functions really, really well for photo albums. We're having a Chanukah/graduation party pretty soon, and I could definitely see making use of that.

I'm more interested in the web browser improvements - it would be awesome if they'd port over Mozilla to the system.

At least a Facebook App isn't as useless as Playstation Home is.

There was a semi-confirmed rumour that unified chat is coming though. IDK when. Some disc based PS3 games are available for digital download btw. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is. I think the big reason most aren't though is size. We're talking 8gb to 25gb per game. North American doesn't really have the infrastructure for that. It would kill download caps and take forever.

Although I think Facebook is retarded, I have to agree with that. At least I can see a reason why people would use Facebook.

Yeah, I forgot about GT5, but there are VERY few games to download. And since the 360 is starting to make some progress on their digitally downloadable games, I don't see why Sony can't do the same. I've already downloaded a few games for my 360 and I LOVE it. I don't have to get up to swap the game, just select and play. Unfortunately MS limits the hard drive size so that is a real problem. :|

I don't really care one way or the other about Facebook integration, I'm just glad they fixed that the ugly mess they made out of the friend list with the last big update. They've made it now where the box only shows up around the currently selected friend and you can change the color of the box as too. This is worlds better than how it is now.

Ok, now that's a worthwhile update. The site is blocked for me, do they say when the update will be released?

"Soon". Which to me means this Thursday when they do all the normal updates and software releases on PSN.

The ability to access Facebook isn't what I'm talking about. If you are accessing Facebook on your PS3, that means you are probably at home. Which means you are probably near your computer, which is always preferable. This update isn't about gaining access to your Facebook, it's about integration. It's about auto-updates that turn Facebook into Twitter, which it isn't. If this had been a Twitter integration, it would have made sense. Anything with this kind of intergration with Facebook has failed.

Dumb. I wish there was a way to turn off all the stupid icons in my XMB that they keep adding in (PSN Store only needs to be ONE location, I've never used Home and never plan to, and if I want to use Facebook I'll use my PC).

Now THAT would be a great feature. The ability to hide icons would be awesome. Less clutter and only the icons you want to see.

Warhawk and Burnout Paradise also come to mind as PS3 games available for DD.

Sony was definitely first to the "full game download" table... it's just that, like most everything else they do, they did it half-assed. Way too much focus on first-party games (with the notable exception of BO:p).

I like digital downloads of games - the convenience factor is great. But until they're priced at some sort of substantial discount to reflect a lack of resale value, they're not really going anywhere. The publishers are still in denial, but one of them will eventually figure it out.

Leave it to Sony to tie advertisements into this. Come on, posting PSN store purchases?

Not true.

I am totally looking forward to this feature, just so I can get back at all of the people I know who were constantly spamming me with Mafia Wars and Farmville updates before I blocked those apps.
