Two straight up FPS, a FPS hybrid with RPG elements, and a straight Diablo clone won't make 2007 an equal for 2000. :p

I'd say Dragon Age should be on the list, but I don't think it has a publisher yet, let alone a release date.

Crysis, if it lives up to the demo vids we've seen, is the only one of the group that would cause me to upgrade my videocard to play. Upating my OS maybe be different story. Hopefully MS releases SP1 within a year.

Today gaming companies havent been releasing to many good games the past few years. There been some good games like quake 4, oblivion, age of empires III. But heck alot of the other games that have been release in the past few years, they look rather boring to me. The gaming companies lately have been trying to push games with awesome graphics quality but have been lacking on the gameplay and story line. Sure it nice to have awesome graphics, but hell it no fun to play a game that only last a few hours, has a lame story line, and has no replay value.

Given my experience with games lately, I'm actually inclined to expect that they'll all be crap, either bland, repetitive, or buggy/resource hogs.

Maybe it's just my perspective/paradigm changing, but the entire society looks and smells like a steam pile. Mediocrity and lack of imagination have become ubiquitous. Games used to provide more of an intelligent escape from the mundane, but they've just become too mainstream now (lowest common denominator).

Programmers have become more lazy today, because of the more powerful hardware available. Back in the prePentium Classic days and earlier, software had to be highly optimized because of the pitiful hardware. Today, we've got audio cards that boast more processing power than those used to put men on the moon.

I agree, look at ea with the need for speed series. They are cranking out a new one every year now. It's been pretty much the same game for the last 3 or 4 releases just different background, some different cars and races. Same with their sports games, same game every year, just updated roster, graphics and some minor gameplay diffrent, nothing totally new has been added that worth while.

Without getting off topic -

My number one is Command and Conquer 3. Was always a big fan of Command and Conquer. C&C Generals had good single player value but the near-future tech environment made for some bad multi-player balancing issues and the series lost its creative edge by adding units with more or less all the same capabilities.

Cyrsis looks like a sweet game and is my #2. I just hope, for the love of god, they make more interactive weapons and environments. I'm sick of all these FPS games with 12 weapons that all cause the same outcome. Which is the AI just flopping around until it hits a solid object. If I shoot the AI in the leg with a large caliber magnum I expect them to limp down in pain other than die like they just got shot in the heart. The technology is there, so use it. I don't care how many trees I can shoot down, but if the AI is like shooting at paper billboards on strings the game will get boring real fast. This is why I fell in love with Resident Evil 2. It had a perfect mix of everything. Atmosphere, gore, weapons, characters, story, and puzzle finding.

Admit it! How fun was it to blow a zombies head off with a magnum or blow off its legs with a double barrel shot gun? Don't get me started on the rocket launcher that blew the entire torso off the Zombie. Now all we have is rubber dolls. With the average age of gamers reaching into the 30's, there's no excuse to use robber dolls anymore. At least make a parental control for gore if they are so worried about it.

Er, not exactly.

Far Cry isn't what I'd call a straight up FPS. Levels were large and mostly non-linear, combat was realistic, and overall it was more tactical than your average FPS like Doom or Half-Life. Crysis seems to continue off of that, but also adding RPG elements like weapon customization and a changing storyline.

STALKER is not a straight up FPS either. There are actual conversations, the game is completely non-linear, there are several endings, and overall it is very much a FPS/RPG... assuming it is released, of course. I've been waiting for it since 2003.

Bioshock is a FPS/RPG, yes, and that's why it will kick ass. The FPS/RPG genre is easily the best ever invented and if it's as good as System Shock II I will be very happy based on that one game alone.

A straight up Diablo clone... in first person with guns. It looks like a typical shooter/RPG on the surface of things but randomly generating maps in the vein of Diablo alongside those other elements is something that hasn't been done before.

STALKER and Bioshock both have the potential to beat Deus Ex and that alone gives the year potential to beat 2000. Add one excellent looking shooter to reach Top 10 and an addictive first person hack and slash shooter and you have great potential for a great year. I really hope they come out as good as they appear to be.

TF2 and Spore only. I probably can't run UT2k7 and if they leave double-dodging/double-jumping in I won't even pick it up.

It's still closer to Hitman's third person than Diablo's, so it doesn't make much of a difference.

I agree with some of their picks, but I don't agree with placing a typical, albeit excellent looking, first person shooter as #1. We have enough FPS games out, we don't need more. We need more quality strategy, RPG, and adventure titles.

You don't agree that the masses anticipate Crysis above all other PC games for 2007? This isn't a "watch out for" list, its a list that is telling you what is popular before it is even out. And good graphics is the best way to become popular amongst that masses if all they can do is look and not touch.
