Firing up mIRC again for the heck of it.

For some silly reason, I downloaded mIRC and fired her back up. I figure while I am mucking around with it, I might lurk around and have some nostalgia of the days of yore when I used to hang out on "merk" all the time.

Where are some cool places to hang out on there? It seems pretty barren compared to its former glory. What sort of fun and trouble can I get into?

P.S. Only losers call it EM-IYE-AR-CEE.

i always get strange responses when i say i use kvirc.

:/

i mainly use it for getting new anime releases, and keeping in touch with my scanlation group.

only losers think that mIRC = IRC

I realize that, but mIRC is (was, in my day at least don't know now) the best.

well it was definitely the most popular windows client

That it was. Do you get snippity when people ask for a Band-aid or a Kleenex?

I used to spend all my time in warez channels, downloading on dialup sucked because sometimes you'd get disconnected and weren't able to resume transfers.

I've been in #windows on efnet for about 15 years straight. I usually have the channel floating on my desktop. It's been the same group of about 30-50 people with 100 lurkers for eons now.

The vast majority of my time was probably spent DLing pr0n on DalNET. However, there was a Transformers channel on EsperNet that I spent many years in, too. In fact, I just logged in the other day and it turns out the same people are still there some 15 years later. No surprise though, that's IRC for you.

haha.. I used to get my warez from websites, then once that disappeared, I got them from mirc, then from P2P. I don't download warez anymore, but I guess it has moved to torrentz now...

I actually kind of enjoyed using mIRC. Having to message the bots to see their menus of stuff, and then issuing commands to download things, and waiting in line for hours on end until your download started.

Best IRC experience:

Back in 2002 Microsoft used to hold tech discussions on IRC. We had about 200 people in a room, and you had to type a ? if you wanted to ask a question, then wait to be acknowledged. Otherwise, it was pretty much just non-stop chat spam scrolling up the screen.

In those days, everyone had the plugin for Winamp that would broadcast what you are playing. This guy had his running and it kept popping up common song names. About 20 minutes into the meeting, something like this displayed:

**<Username> Is listening to: "Twink Bareback Sex.AVI"

From that point, it was 30 minutes of lol-age.

nothing is really great anymore.

back in the day hanging out on lutzifer, qsd, tchh, altgiers was much better than irc...then phone bridges were even better.

I was on the Undernet a shit ton from 1994-2003. Sadly a big part of my life then. Hung out in the WWF and wrestling channels and did some action keyboard wrestling, lol. Did the warez thing, "I'll trade you my 0-day FTP site for yours, etc."

Love the good ol days.

Also used IRC on a BBS back in the early 90s. Text based only.
