I'll be visiting the Bay Area soon. Some friends over there and I would like to do something fun, we came up with: paintball, driving range, and firing range. Firing range looks like the more popular choice right now so...

The only time I've ever fired a gun was at some clay discs when I was 13. This will be purely for recreation. None of us have any real experience with guns. Any advice? Do we just show up?

Also, we'll be going in the Bay Area, CA. Does anyone have any advice on a good place to go?

Go here and enter a zip code. Call ahead of time. Many ranges will only let you rent a firearm if you bring one of your own.

Yeah, Target Masters is probably the most well known.
Prices are decent, and so is the selection. They won't rent you a gun if you come alone (some shmoe blew his brains out using a rental), but if you bring your own, you are good to go.
There are limitations on the ammo: no self-prepared ammo (or whatever you call it), and limits on the factory ammo as well (only brass jackets if I remember correctly).

Staff is quite nice.

Yep,

That is my favorite range around here. They rent weapons too, (assuming you guys dont have your own guns)

Pistols, .22lr rifle, and shotguns allowed only as I remember.. haven't been shooting in about a year though, and I always brought my own guns.

By the way, Bay Area people: where do you buy your ammo?
I usually get 2 cases at Target Masters, but it's not very cheap. I believe you could get it at Walmart, but I never tried...
I'm not looking for an online place: just some B&M where I could drop by right before I go to the range and get a case or two.

Thank you.

Wal-Mart is pretty good in a pinch.. They have Remington UMC at a very fair price.

I usually stock up there when I am not reloading my own.

do your friends have guns? or you guys are just looking to rent? If you don't have guns, Target Masters like the others have suggested are awesome, abit a tad expensive (you have to buy their ammo if you rent their guns).

If your friends have their own guns/ammo, the range down by the garbage dump in San Leandro is pretty cheap. Just don't go on a hot day :p
