Firewire question

I have a Sony DV cam, and a VAIO laptop with firewire port, what kind of software will I need to get the video onto the laptop?

I recently purchased a Sony TRV320 and am using the software from the StudioDV kit that got thrown into the deal. It's from a company called Pinnacle Systems. It's very easy to use and has some very nice features. I think there are a couple other packages that are similar to this one in features and ease of use but I have only had first hand experience with this one. It has one very nice feature in that it can be set to "preview" mode while capturing video. In this mode you can dump an hour of DV tape onto the hard drive in about 150mb of space. Full quality requires 240mb of disk space for just 1 minute! Once you have done your editing in "preview" mode the software will automatically re-capture only the footage you kept for the final "movie" at full quality.

Just go to the Pinnacle site and see if they sell the software by itself. The kit I have came with a firewire card which you don't need. Or post on the ForSale/Trade forum and see if someone has some software they would sell to you. I'm guessing you could find the Studeo DV software for around $30-40.
