I have found descriptions on how to connect 2 computers using Firewire.

Q: I ordered a 6-wire cable for the connection. A note at CablesToGo says to use 4-wire cable if you don't need power. The boxes' built-in connectors are all 6-wire. Will having power from each box be a problem? Should I snip the 12V wires?
 
No. Firewire will not care. There is also little reason to do it via firewire. Firewire maxes at 800mbps. May as well use 2 gig nic's and a cable. The newer spec (1.6gbps and 3.2gbps) are not out yet, nor can most machines take advantage of the speed yet.

I am hooking two quads together to do an 8-core parallel process to sift for primes. The Firewire will only carry infrequent messages, so speed is not critical.

Ok, but if that is the case, just use ethernet?
 
My LAN is busy with a lot of other stuff. And, I think it would be fun to set up. (I have too much time on my hands.)
 
Firewire ethernet should "just work", as long as the driver's there it'll just be another network interface.
