Firewire networking

I noticed the other day that WindowsXP is recognizing my 1394 card as a network device. I am just curious if anyone has experience with firewire networking. Are there hubs? Is it reliable? Is there any real use for it (I am helping to a host a lan party soon)?
thanks,

It can be networked, but it's somewhat limited for most people. Cables can only be 15 feet in length. There are hubs , but they're expensive compared to Ethernet stuff. http://www.charismac.com/Products/firedino/ Hubzilla is one that might be worth the money just for the fun. 🙂 There's also a limit on the number of hubs; maximum total distance is 237 feet using copper wires. You can set it up with fibre transceivers, but they're still in the range of 300 to 500 dollars.

Performance varies. It is faster than a single Fast Ethernet connection. It's as reliable as anything else; Firewire isn't exactly a lossy technology. You can get more info here: http://www.homenethelp.com/network/firewire.asp The references at the end have some performance tests. I'm sure you can find more.
