Hey guys, i have tried everything i can think of.....im stretched to my limits, my family and i just moved from san jose, ca to Kona Hawaii so my brain isnt quite working right atm. I know there are some bright folks here so maybe you can help me out.

Here is my problem:

I recently bought a Western Digital external firewire HD (120GB, FW only), i went with the Belkin F5U508 Firewire/USB2 combo card since it was getting great reviews. I used it to back up all my critical data before i hoisted my computer up onto the container going over seas. Now im here and what im seeing is that while transfering data TO the FW HD, there are no problems....transfering data FROM the FW HD to my system i get random system resets, its driving me crazy. I also have a laptop with built in firewire, and it works fine on it....so ive narrowed it down to either the belkin card, or an incompatibility with the belkin card and my system (not necessarily a defect in either). I have moved the Belkin card to every single slot on the motherboard, windows reports no conflicts...there is some PCI/IRQ sharing going on of course though.

My System:

Dual Athlon 1200MP
Tyan Tiger MP Motherboard (760MP, not MPx)
1GB Ram
adaptec 29160 adapter
IBM 18GB 10,000 RPM disk drive
Plextor CDRw (atapi)
Creative DVD (atapi)
Intel PRO/100+ Management NIC
Geforce3 Ti500 64MB
Sound Blaster Live
Belkin F5U508 Firewire/USB2.0 combo
Various USB Peripherals (unhooked all during troubleshooting, still had same problem, so irrelevant.

Running Windows XP Pro

Note: I had not yet done windows update (SP1 +crit updates, also nitced a new "processor driver" under the drivers section) but i am completely up to date now as i write this, so we will see if my problem disappears.

Any ideas?

The combo sans SP1 may be your problem. XP Pro handles Firewire from the beginning, but not USB 2. That came with SP1. I had a combo and XP ignored the USB part - the Firewire worked OK. But with SP1, it all works.

There is a remote possibility that the PCI slot you have the card in shares with some other device that is not compatible both ways. Try a different slot.

I am now current on updates, including SP1.....all my drivers are correctly installed. I have USB peripherals hooked up to the card and they work fine, re-read my post i tried all slots, i also took out all non essential adapters during troubleshooting. Only had scsi and video along with it....and moved them inmany different combos.

Still not working after SP upgrades.

Sounds like you may have a defective card insofar as 1394 is concerned. See if you can exchange it.
