Firewire harddrive question

How do the transfer rates differ between a genuine firewire harddrive and a converted firewire harddrive?

I have two "factory" Firewire HDDs - one on each computer. But basically they are laptop harddrives (4200 rpm) inside of mini-conversion housings. They are perfect for storage of data and can also "nest" one on the other for direct copying. The transfer rates are more than adequate. I never wait on them. I have been looking at 1394 housings, and would expect no difference at all. They are essentially IDE drives which can handle transfer rates beyond what Firewire or USB can throw at them.
