Firewire for file transfer betw PC and laptop doesn't work!!

I've tried setting the 1394 connection in network settings on WinXP so that the IPs are only one digit away (i.e. 192.168.254.50 and 192.168.254.49) and having the subnet mask be 255.255.255.0 but it still doesn't work.

In fact, I'm not even sure what to expect when it does work. Will the computers act like they are all part of the same workgroup?

I've also tried hooking the two up via USB but that seems to do nothing.

I've used firewire on my desktop and laptop to transfer files occasionally. I think all you have to do is hook the cable up and run the Windows' "Network setup wizard" and chosing the same workgroup name. I didn't even have to mess with the IP address. A weird thing is that it takes more than a few minutes for the computers to recognize each other. I think the firewire cable acts just like a crossover cable, but at a faster speed, 400 megabits compared to 100 megabits.
