Firewire External enclosure problem

I bought an USB2.0 and Firewire combo enclosure for HD from Compgeeks. But I have a strange problem.

For example, when I run VirtualDub to edit a file on this drive, the light became red and there was no response for a second.

Then an error message appeared:

"Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \Device\Harddisk\Volume7\$Mft.The data has been lost.

This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere".

Then I lost the drive letter in the Windows Explorer.

I had to power off this baby and power on again. The drive reappeared. This problem is occured randomly.

Can anyone help me?

BTW, I use the 1394 port, not USB2.0. The drive is a Maxtor 40G. I tried this Maxtor in an ADS 1394 case(Oxford 911 chip)

ran it for almost 10 days, nothing wrong happened. Could it be the Ti chipset's problem?

My system is Windows 2000 pro.

Thanks.

Out of interest's sake, what chipset does it use? I just ordered the Compgeeks USB 1.1/Firewire enclosure, which uses the Oxford 911 chipset.
