Firewire experts. . .

episodic

Lifer
Hi, I have inherited a canon dv ZR800. I have a firewire cable that plugs into the camera just fine. I knew that my mac mini (late 2009) is supposed to have a firewire port.

I went to plug it in and the firewire cable that I got with the camera is taller and more rectangular (though assuredly not USB). The port on the mac is more squarish. They clearly don't mate.

So, can someone give me a quick education? I'm a former pc user that has 0 experience with firewire.

Thanks!

Ok, I seem to have partially answered my question with this page
http://8help.osu.edu/1249.html

It seems the camera came with a firewire 400 cable - and I have firewire 800.

It mention there are adapters to solve my problem. Are they safe? Recommended ones?

Thanks for any and all information for a guy bummed that it isn't going to work this weekend and I have to order whatever it is that will work online and wait a week to get it 😛

you need firewire 800 to firewire 400. any old cable will do (bought some off monoprice and its been working fine for years now).

Yea, all you need is a Firewire 800-400 adapter. They either come as cables, or dongles.
