Firewire CD-ROM question

I had been interested in a Firewire CD-ROM, 16X or faster, that I was going to share with my son. He has a laptop, me a PC, and I would get a firewire card, and he would get a firewire PCMCIA card. In checking into the drives, I read that IDE drives are used in an external enclosure, with firewire connections, so, they can not be any faster than the IDE device that is in them. Is any part of this not correct?
Thanks,
Andrew
