Firewire card trouble

I'm at my wits end here.

I've got a Adaptec Fireconnect 4300 firewird card and it refuses to be installed on my machine.

The mobo is an Aopen Ax4b-533 tube.

Upon putting it into a PCI slot the machine will not boot up. And by that I mean it shuts down 1/2 second after I turn the power on. If I remove the card and turn the power supply on and off, it will boot normally, but no matter what slot I use it refuses to boot if the offending card is installed.

I thought I might have a bad card, so i've returned it for another. Same problem.

I tried removeing the network card as well, no luck there.

I've previously installed this exact same brand card into my wife's 3 year old Dell with no problem =

The adaptec site doesn't seem to cover this, and i've been googling different variations of this all night.

If you guys have any ideas, i'd love to hear them :)

Thanks in advance for any help.

After a late night of searching, I was able to find a few more users with this problem, but no solutions to speak of =\

If it shuts off after 1/2 second with the card installed it almost sounds like it is shorting something out, or maybe you've got a bad card...?

That's what I was thinking, but I returned it, and the replacement has the exact same issue.

The problem could be the PCI slot. Did you try a different slot? Do you have XP SP2 installed? That has been known to screw up Firewire to a fare thee well.

I did try the other available PCI slots. It didn't like any of them either.

And no, i'm staying away from SP2 for a little while :)
