Firewire card that actually works with a DV Camera?

These days, 99% of motherboards have onboard Firewire onboard. My Gigabyte DS-3 does not. So, I bought a cheap (probably my first mistake) FW card. S-link is the brand.

Windows detects the card fine and loads the standard OHCI compliant driver.

The issue is that though my Panasonic DV camera is detected AND I can control the camera (stop/play/FF) over the FW, I get no video and no sound. This is with three different capture apps. The connection is there...but it's not there. 😕

I did some research and the probably seems to be the Via 6306 FW chip on the card; it's got a history of not working with DV cams...with no fix.

SO, what FW card should I buy that is "guaranteed" to work w/a DV cam? I'm going to try something with a TI chipset or NEC chipset.

But, if someone's got a Via-chipped card that's working w/a DV camera, I'll take suggestions.

Yes, Via chipsets can be an issue. It can also be the capture utility with the chipset in some instances. You can download and try VirtualDub to see if it has the same issue just to rule out the NLE. I have a "firewire" card similar to this one and it works flawlessly.

Thanks very much. I'll try out VirtualDub; though I'm sure I'll get the same results. I've tried NeroExpress3.0, Ulead studio 8.0 and MS Moviemaker.

If you ever get to HDV, you want my "firewire" card. It helps prevent Out of Sync audio with the video stream. The processor onboard handles the audio stream better than most onboards (assuming your Rig is current).

 
I got the same results with VirtualDub. 🙁

It's got to be the card. I've reloaded DirectX and the videocard drivers just for the hell of it...waste of time.

How the hell can you make/sell a 1394 card that won't work with a 1394 device?
