Firewalls

Hey all . . . I just wanted to get some information about firewalls.
I suspect that my computer has been hacked into, had a virus
that allowed peeps remote access to my comp when I was online,
and now I just want to make sure I've rid myself of that and stay clean.
So I thought I should try and run a firewall as well, but don't really know
where to start with them. I appreciate any help you guys can give.
Thanks,
-H

backup, format, reinstall, patch, install firewall and up to date anti-virus, check for more patches, connect to the net for the first time. That shoul make sure you are safer.

When you say patch do you mean just update windows and other programs, those kinds of patches? Just to make sure I understand what you are refering to.

Thanks . . .
And I am currently debating whether I want to go through formating my HD . . . cause i've got ~60 gigs of stuff that I dont want to lose, and dont want to spend hours burning yet, but will prolly end up doing that soon, especially if I pick up anything unusual using the firewalls, just to make sure I am safer . . .

Windows update, newest versions of various programs, any updates for software you use (IIS especially if you use it). Thats it. 🙂

Thanks . . .

Having backups is always a good thing. You may not want to format, but you dont get much of a choice when you disk dies.

I recommend Tiny Personal Firewall. I like it because it will popup when a program of mine is trying to connect out or if some other person is trying to connect in on any port. Since I know what I am doing and if it should be I can create an appropriate filter as needed.

dont forget that Tiny is being developed now by Kerio software to make it version 3.0 (Kerio personal firewall). i highly recommend it.
