Something newer well let you put some file sharing, email server, or game server type action on the linux box too...
 
Easiest and cheapest would be a cable/dsl router. Since you're on cable and probably have a static ip, I'd recommend Linksys, or go a few bucks more and get the SMC barricade. Using the info supplied by your ISP, just follow the instructions that come with the router and it's about as easy as that.
