Firewall Software

Hey, long time lurker, but anyways, I have been working for the past few months on some firewall software, I was hoping you guys could take a look at it, give me some feedback on what you think, ways to improve it, etc..

It's pretty neat software and it comes with integrated popup blocking, and it kills Messenger Service Ads, and I designed it kinda simple so it's easy to understand and everyone can use it.
Hoping to hear what you guys think, maybe ways to improve the software, etc.. Right now for the next release which should be due in about 2 weeks it's gonna feature live updates for the spam lists and cookie management.

Here's the link for the download.com site, download.com link

and the website which talks more about it, plep labs

Hope to hear from you guys.
peace

A) This might be considered spam because you're promoting a product you're affiliated with, just something to watch out for.
B) You need to ask yourself (or your company) what sets your product apart, what features make it better than the other 300 or so firewalls out there? Frankly I can't answer that question for you because I don't use Windows much these days and my little Windows use is limited to a corporate network with a PIX firewall and I run mozilla so I don't need a popup blocker or a PC firewall.

There's 300 or so kernel level firewalls ?
I thought it was just Sygate, Zone Alarm, Kerio and Symantec.

?

Interesting point, the diffrence is that we want to hear from people what they think can make better Firewall Products, neat features they want in, and get more feedback from you guys so we can make better products. And our binary is way tiny, runs quicker, and is much more simpler to use, the next release has some more advanced rule settings, cause a few people have been asking for more user options to set rules and see what ip's the requests are coming from , etc..

You're missing one key feature: free for personal use

I think you might be right, when Symantec and Norton got started of they where the only players in the game, then Sygate and Zone Alarm came along and there's where free for personal use.

Thanks for the feedback.

I decided, I'm gonna release a Free Version of the firewall, but it's gonna be no frills eye candy wise...
Mostly for the techy people, gonna feature all the advanced filter settings and advanced IP packet response settings.

LOL, that page has its uses (like scaring newbies into getting a firewall), but I'd hardly consider it a top-priority test for thoroughly checking a firewall. 😉

Hmm, your pimpin' peice of software used 99% of my cpu's friggin power the entire time it ran, used 16meg of memory too... :frown: :disgust:

Think ill stick with my hardware firewall + router, at least that doesnt take SoB's precious cpu cycles away :frown: :disgust:

Sorry about that, I'm guessing you didnt' reboot, the next release is gonna be free and will have a lot more error code checking, ex. not let you to run the software application until after a reboot, etc..

Tough market to break into by an unknown. There are some proven excellent products out there, some still free.

Yea, indeed. Symantec, Sygate and Zone Labs are no joke, Symantec is backed by a few billion, and Sygate and Zone labs are backed by a few hundred million and not to mention big name VC groups with Billions in management and liquid cash.

But anyways, about 20-30 people where reporting problems because they didn't reboot the system and just ran the program. That bug and a few others, now if you try to run the program without rebooting it gives you an error message saying it has to reboot 🙂

I'm hoping the free advanced techie version of the firewall will bring in a lot more downloads off the server. And I can get reviews of the free version on CNET, wired and other big portals to get the name out.
But the program looks really drab and full of details (ip logs, attack graphs, live updates, filter rules based on all sorts of conditions, etc..).

peace.

Dude, your pimpin' peice of software was run after reboot on my computer, and it still used 99% resources and lagged up my machine.

My machine takes a considerable amount to lag...

Personally I'd be very concerned about turning over my network's security to a new firewall from a new (unknown) developer.
