I have 3 computers on my network all configured to connect through a gateway. My question is, does installing a firewall program on the gateway extend protection to the clients, or does each require a seperate instance of the firewall to be running? The program I'm using is zone alarm pro if that matters.

yes the firewall will protect everything on the lan side of your gateway/router. (don't think it will make you invinsible, but I rarely have problems on my lan with my linksys router with the same firewall.)
