Firewall problems

I have tried many different firewalls in the past few days ranging from Sygate to Kerio 2.15 to Kerio 4. They would all give my problems (ie when I would try to open firefox, they wouldn't ask me whether to give it permission, they would just prevent it from openining a website. or it wouldn't let me log onto AIM even when the permissions setting was set to ask or permit). So now I am using ZoneAlarm. It has worked pretty well, except I have noticed one annoying problem. I have AIM set to "start automatically when windows starts," however, when it does this, you cannot use AIM. For example, you will go to type to someone and click "send" and it will just hang, eventually telling you that you aren't connected. Another interesting thing is that when you double click the icon in the system tray, AIM is not present in the top bar where programs normally are. Any help would be appreciated... if you can fix the problems I was having with Kerio and Sygate then please do so. If you know why ZoneAlarm isn't working properly, let me know. i use ZA and trillian and have no problems
