Firewall: Hardware vs Software?

Hi guys,

I'm new in security. I was just wondering, what's the adv. & disadv. of having hardware firewall over software firewall. Which one is better? Would it be more secure to have both hardware AND software in your network? Can you guys link me up w/ some links about this. TIA!!

What I mean by hardware firewall is those firewall that comes built in w/ router (Linksys, SMC, etc.). Are those good enough? Better than software? Or is there more sophisticated hardware firewall?

Why compare the 2?

I would rate as such

*Lowest Security*
Software
Hardware
Both Hardware and Software
*Highest Security*

Teaming up a hardware firewall and zonealarm is a tough combo to beat.
