is it possible to set firefox to clear the stored information upon exiting the client? i want it to clear every thing but the stored passwords upon exiting (i.e.: the history, saved form information, download manager history, cookies, and the cache)

is it possible to do this through the about:config dialog somewhere? i've tried looking for it under there, but couldn't find anything.

You can set up the download manager to erase the history as soon as it finishes downloading, but dunno about the rest. Sorry. :(

any ideas on where to get the extension from?

I don't use firefox, but an IE shell called SlimBrowser, and although I have no need at home, at work I have it set to clear everything but cookies on browser quit.

Er ... is it just me or ... wouldn't setting cache size to zero, telling it not to save form information, and setting history to zero have the save effect ?

I don't know if you can clear all the settings automatically on exit, but if it helps, there's the x extension that adds a button making it easier to clear them all at once.
