I think Firefox 0.9 is scheduled to be released sometime before June 15th.

what i don't get is, why are they releasing mozilla 1.8 alpha when they haven't released mozilla 1.7 non-release-candidate? o.o?

Each release gets "forked" into its own branch. There must be some bugs with the "blocking1.7" flag set, but that doesn't mean developers can't keep working on "trunk" (currently 1.8alpha)
