Firefox user asks ... how does Google make money ?

I am simply curious ... I have been a firefox user for well over 5 years and been using Ad blockers for a very long time as well.

I have rarely seen a google ad while browsing the web. I use a ton of google tools (gmail, maps, earth, voice etc.) but I have paid $0 for them.

I know a ton of friends and colleagues across the country who use Firefox + Adblock or similar to block ads.

So how does Google make money ? Moments ago they reported close to $5 billion dollars in revenue !! From what ? Ads ? Seriously ? Are we talking about Google or a possible Googlenron ?

This is a serious question ... I am hoping some financially savvy member can shed some light on this.

I think they make money from farming information as well? Or maybe they just use that for targeted ads; I'm not really sure.

99.9% of web users don't block ads and 95% of internet users click ads all the time.

Watching my dad and other older folks using google search, they click ads all the time thinking that they are results.

Seriously?
Most people still use IE.
Not everyone that uses FF uses an ad blocking tool.

Google is the default provider of search (see the search to the right of the title bar + select text and right click for "Search google for <search term>".

Google provides payments to those who route users to use google search. Firefox is probably the largest entity that does this, and that is where most of firefox revenue comes from.

But does Google have that many ads? They're certainly not the same annoying flashy ones on AT that I remember. Sure I use Adblock, but I use IE8 a good amount too, and the ads never really bothered me on Google.

I think they farm a lot of info from you and that's a lot of money as well.

Bing on the other hand is quiet obviously advertising HEAVILY....

98% of the people who use FireFox don't even know about Addons. I love when people go "Why aren't you using Chrome yet?" Me: Because I like FF's addons. Do you use chrome extensions? Them: WTF is that?

I wonder if Firefox has agreement with other search companies. I'm guessing the included default searches are in some sort of agreement.

The data farming isn't generating any revenue directly. It does allow them to show you more targeted ads that you would are more likely to click.

I'm all for it actually. If google can show me an ad that I actually want, we both win. I get a good link (maybe a good deal or a good product) and they get revenue. It sure beats being shown blindly targeted ads.

What ? That's cash outflow ... what about cash inflow ?

Advertisers pay to be in Google's ad listings.

Its very simple. Google is an advertising company. Everything else they do is geared towards making you look at more of their ads. GMail shows ads, Search shows ads, etc.

Google makes billions selling paid keyword placement adds just on their search site. Also, most users are the casual variety who use IE, or maybe use firefox with no clue what a firefox plugin is. I handle the web analytics in a company with dozens of ecommerce sites. Firefox hasnt even overtaken IE 6 yet on our sites. Also, firefox penetration in the market didnt increase over MS browsers at all over the past year for us, so anyone thinking MS is losing substantial market share because of their inferior browser should think again.

I'm pretty sure adblock doesn't block google ads for search.

this is how google makes most of the monies

How We Generate Revenues

Advertising revenues made up 97% of our revenues for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2008 and 2009. We derive most of our additional revenues from offering internet ad serving and management services to advertisers and ad agencies and the license of our enterprise products, search solutions, and web search technology.

If you think "most people" use ad blockers you are sorely mistaken. Most people don't even know what a "web browser" is. They just click on the "internet" "picture" on their "screen".

The more people use the internet, the more money Google makes. Sure, a certain percentage of people will block all ads, and even more will simply ignore them, but it's a numbers game for Google.

Bonus question: How much did you think it costs to be in the top placement on google for the search term "credit card"?

It's about $12.

The most expensive ones:

mesothelimoa 99.44
buy structured settlements 79.01
asbestos law suits 78.10
conference calling companies 75.29
annuity loans 72.82
pop up display booths 72.53
purchasing structured settlement 68.79
student loan debt consolidation 68.54
asbestos law firm 67.97
secured loans 67.57
mesothelioma lawyers 67.37
sell my structured settlement payment 66.21
asbestos law firms 65.03

Most people don't pirate web services.

If I'm searching for something and it comes up as a result and an ad, I'll click the ad since Google did its job.
