Firefox: shift + click open in new tab?

Is there a way to force this instead of opening a new window? Shift-clicking is an old habit of mine from before tabbed browsing became standard.

I have tried that before and if it can do it I couldn't figure out how.

If your mouse has a scroll wheel then a simple Middle-Click will work.

I know there are alternatives, but I have years of habit to break (mostly from using Avant before IE even had tabs). And My laptop doesn't have a middle button either. I'm really surprised more people don't find this an issue. Or at least enough where this would be an option or add-on for the more popular browsers.
