Firefox Remains Open in Processes

Hey everyone. I only noticed this to be happening relatively recently, but quite frequently, if my computer is experiencing a little bit of lag, I check my processes tab, and there could be anywhere from 1 to 8 Firefoxs still open in the background, taking up anywhere from 20k to 200k of memory (possibly if i was using my built in media player and it stayed open).

I have already reinstalled more than once, and the same problem occurs. I have read that this could be the side effect of being infected with some kind of trojan, who needs firefox to be open for some sort of server access, but I have not seen anything else wrong with my computer or other symptoms of a virus.

Anyone know what else could be causing this annoying problem? Thanks in advance.

Have you done a complete virus scan? If you suspect it's a trojan, maybe it is. I've never had that happen to my XP or Vista machines.

Yeah, I ran Norton and several spy ware and ad ware programs. Removed and possible things it found but nothing was major.

I have had this issue as well but not to your extent and my instances have been varied. (I am not a programmer or anyone who would know better so take my words with a grain of salt) To me it looks like firefox is trying to do some processes which it is not receiving a response from. Even though the application is closed it seems like there is a task that it is trying to do in the background and is stuck on. I have also had, what appears to me as. memory leaks in firefox as well. I can close the application down and some process within firefox starts eating up memory. My firefox.exe process can balloon to 300-400mb + in ram and keep climbing until I force the End Process.

I really can't say why this happens but I know that often it takes a computer restart to fix it where I may not see it happen again for weeks or longer. Otherwise, I just end task and often times it reloads ok. More unusual complex function seem to make this occur then normal web browsing. Like large media files loaded into firefox, or browser based applications loaded into firefox which may indicate a problem with the application and not firefox itself. Also closing firefox when it's in the middle of doing something like loading a page or media makes this happen more often. For me I never see like 2+ .exe instances nor does it happen that often (at worst a few times a month) so I haven't bothered trying to fix it. Sorry I dont have a fix for you, just adding that it or something like ti happens to me too.
