However I CANNOT do this in firefox and it pisses me off to no end... is there some extension i can d/l to do this?

Ctrl-N -> open new window
Ctrl-L -> put your cursor in the url bar

well, that's with mozilla, at least. but i think it should work the same with firefox?

It's there for me. I'm using 9.2 still. What version are you using?

Try just looking under the File menu for the Open File... item and see if it has a different shortcut.

why can't you type URLs into the text box in the file dialog (don't know why you'd want to, but it works)

it does if you prefix it with the proper protocol (ie. http://www.anandtech.com)

Has anyone found a way to customize the keyboard shortcuts in firefox? I just downloaded Firefox 1.0PR. I've been using IE for more than 8 years now, and am quite attached to ctrl-o. Adding http:// in the firefox file open window causes a page download for offline viewing.

I don't understand what's wrong with Ctrl + L, or pressing Ctrl + T and typing the address in the newly created tab :confused:
