Firefox & Notepad question

I'm using Firefox 1.0 on my WinXP PC. When I click on a readme file, I get the 'choose application to open' message. Notepad is listed, but when I highlight it, the 'always use this' box is greyed out. I have to re-select notepad everytime I open a readme file. Is there a fix for this?

That's Windows' fault. Windows identifies file types by their 3-letter extensions, but doesn't seem to allow you to associate "no extension" with any specific program (in general, this is a reasonable decision).

I never have to selct Notepad from a list when I use IE......so what's different in Firefox?
