Sorry for the negativetly but im kind of urked right now. I accidently mistyped the url i was going to and went to one of those spamming, trojan kind of sites. I was using firefox 1.03. There was a firefox dialog asking me to download readme.exe. DUH!!!!!! I don't think so. I hit cancel and immediatly got notification of a virus. Firefox shouldn't have brought anything over in cache or whatever if i hit cancel so that is the firefox flaw. After i hit ok and quaranteed this crap with mcafee viruscan 9 (yes i have latest version 5/2 definition). Mcafee tells me i ought to do a full scan. I click yes. It finds 4 more viruses in the system scan that got through and almost gets done with the scan and crashes. PIECE OF JUNK. Anyways, i have had this happen before. If a web site sends multiple virus/trojans to you at the same time mcaffee will only get the first one. Yes i am positive i didn't have any virus before that. SO anyways im downloading a file and want to rescan my drive but since mcafee crashed it wont' work. I really need to restart but im downloading a file that is going to take awhile and i can't. Its not only viruscan that i have had a problem I used thier spamkiller 6 product and first of all their docs suck. Its very hard to use and im a programmer. Second, then have this "junk" & "not junk" type button that shows up in outlook. They weren't working so i went to their support forums to see why. They said "oh" these buttons haven't been working since version 5 of thier product. So spamkiller 5 they didnt' work and spamkiller 6 they still don't work. WTF!!!!! They said in the post that the buttons should be working by the next version of the software. What does this say for the QC of this company? Are you confident that its software will stop all viruses if they are this sloppy with the QC? I am a programmer and i would not think releasing something into production stages unless it worked. If i can't believe a software company is so sloppy. I used to use mcaffee and yes it is a resource hog. I have symantec corporate edition on my server and its virusscan service was using 50MB of memory. WOW!!! Anyways it might be a resource hog but ive never had a virus get through norton that i had a definition for. I have rarely ever had norton crash. I have had mcafee crash even after i just built a new machine. I think im going to go to the store to night and pick up trend pc-cillin suite. I can tell i will never go back to macaffe again. They are one of the oldest antivirus firms and they should have it right by now but they apparently make of the worst quality software out there..

I didn't read the whole thing (paragraphs and cliffs would be nice). But mcafee is the worst piece of junk ever.

"You have a virus... what would you like to do?"
*press delete*

"Sorry, Mcafee is unable to delete the virus"
*press quarantine"

"Sorry, Mcafee is unable to quarantine the virus"
*press the only option left*

"Are you sure you don't want to anything about the threat?"
*Kick computer*

Ahhhh, if the virus-infected files got onto your hard drive before McAfee had definitions, then when you finally did do a "back-scan" due to this incident, it could pick up those files that had sneaked in before. This is why my fleet backscans daily, to catch stuff that snuck under the wire a week/month/hour before there were DATs to catch 'em. Better late than nevar :D

So set up a scheduled scan for McAfee. Also, at a guess, were the detected viruses ByteVerify?

EDIT: also, kindly provide the name of the virus that started this incident, if you remember it. :)

No i did have the definitions that cought the virus but the web page tried to send them to me all at once. It cought the first one but left the others. I know the byteverify has been one of them in the past but i still can't get the name just yet. My computer is still downloading that file i was speaking of (big file and its going SLOWWWWW). Once i get everything rebooted i will post the name of the virus.

bud thats what i said i was using on my server if you read above. I am looking at how much memory it is using now. Rtvscan.exe 53,664K. If thats easy on memory id hate to see the ones that take a lot of memory ;)

That sounds like a bummer dude. All I can say is that I have mcafee everything: firewall, net security, virus scan, cache cleaner, etc. and it works like a charm. Spybot and Adaware hasn't detected any spyware in 3 months where my old firewall let in stuff daily. I also use firefox, but also netscape. Sounds like a picnic problem to me... :) j/k

Well, it only uses 18,648 on mine. But you are running the server edition...so, that might be the difference.

AVG isn't that good. Take a look at Schadenfroh's review.

One of my principles of antivirus configuration is that you never set up the antivirus software to ask you what to do in the first place. The keyboard-to-chair interface is slow to respond and prone to errors. Leave it out of the process entirely. :)
