Firefox is the only application that connects to the internet

I don't have specific details. I'm trying to help a friend out (who's trying to help his grandparents). The computer is running XP. Apparently "something wasn't working", so his grandpa powered off the router and modem. When my friend turned it back on, only Firefox will connect to the internet...nothing else. He said he's not sure if it was like this before he got there or not (and his grandparents don't really know much of anything).

That's about all the details I have...any help?

I've seen Opera have issues when internet settings have been changed without rebooting the computer, so start by rebooting the computer. If that doesn't help check the hosts file for inconsistency. Finally, check the proxy settings in IE (Internet Options) and make sure they haven't been enabled or changed.
