Am certain there is likely a method to address the other two items mentioned, but I confess that even though I am quite anal-retentive, I am not quite that anal-retentive.

It's anal-retentive to want things to work the way people knew they should decades ago, and that Konquerer and FF both manage just fine, out of the box (well, for Konquerer, it also depends on the distro)? Not sure about the new IE. FF has a simple UI, with the basics done well. I need to browse the web safely, easily (this includes rapid mouse movement), and with multiple pages per window. Opera still seems to lack in ease of use, despite being otherwise superior (I'm assuming there's an adblock equivalent in that comparison, too, though I have not looked).

Opera does have an AdBlock plugin (extension, whatever you want to call it 😛 ). It does work, but I still much prefer FireFox's method of ad blocking. Not only is the installation easier, but the method of blacklisting items is much simpler.

That is one of the few areas where firefox is superior to Opera, and even I will admit that.

I've personally found Proxomitron to be a superior solution - especially considering it's browser-independent.

Occassionally, a properly configured (and robust) firewall can also prove adequate.

alright, I am sick of firefox taking up ridiculous amount of memory for tab browsing - the only reason I am using it in the first place. Is there any more sensible alternative to FF? does opera also hog memory like crazy when opening multiple tabs?

ok, thats a WHOLE LOT better; it is not unusual to see FF taking up like 120MB after opening up around 15 tabs or so.
